There are a lot of moving parts to working in the culinary field but the most important thing to remember is that you are providing a service, not a product. Everyone will have their role, but your position will be more fluid than in other types of internships. While you may have a specified job, your ultimate goal is to ensure the successful completion of the meal in a timely manner, and sometimes that may require you to take on multiple roles.

Hospitality is a crucial part of food service. Everyone knows that “the customer is always right”, but you won’t only be working with customers. On busy days tensions can run high as everyone scrambles to do many jobs. Lots of internships give interns a chance to explore how they work under pressure, but food service is one of the few that can show you how social interactions are affected by high pressure situations.

For some people, the changing dynamics of food service could make for a chaotic work environment, but it’s perfect for anyone who enjoys taking part in routines with lots of space for improvisation. If you think you might enjoy working with people, food service is one of the best ways to decide whether hospitality is truly one of your great strengths. You’ll learn a lot and hopefully get a few good recipes while you’re there. If a food internship interests you, check out the listings below!
