One Missed Call & Unchecked Voicemail Later…

August 23, 2011

Ashley Peek is a class of 2012, Indiana University student who from now on, will check her voicemail.

No one ever brags about not getting a job. So before I begin, let me reassure you that I am in no way, shape or form, making this scenario out to be a good thing. At all.

Has anyone ever reminded you to always check your voicemail? Especially when you have missed calls from numbers you don’t recognize? No? Consider this your reminder.

I recently applied to become a Campus Representative for Sun Drop, as a part of Campus Entertainment. I came across this position on my schools career site and it seemed perfect for me. It would allow me to use my skills in marketing and promotion and give me the freedom to do Drop Zones of products at events such as football tailgates and the Indiana University Dance Marathon (which would have been even more perfect since I am a chair for the Catering Committee…) and even more so important, it came with a $750 stipend for a six week long job.

So I filled out the application and the snapshot that was emailed to me from the account manager at Campus Entertainment.  I thought I had it in the bag to be completely honest. I answered my questions with witty, yet intelligent answers. Several questions had to do with the amount of social media friends I had, which to my knowledge, I fulfilled their expectations.

But then yesterday I got the sudden urge to check my voicemail. (I have a horrible habit of not doing this….) and low and behold I had a voicemail from Campus Entertainment asking me to do an informal interview via telephone. I immediately got excited.

Then I checked my missed call log…she had called three days prior. My heart dropped a bit, I got a little panicked.

However, I didn’t give up just yet. I called her. No answer. Left a voicemail. She called back. She sounded chipper so again, I was back to being pumped up… just to be let down.

“I had waited one day too long. They had filled the campus rep spots for my university.”

Was I livid? No. Was I upset (with myself?) Yes. Sure… not getting the job because I’m not qualified… completely understandable. But not getting it because I cannot dial a few numbers to check my voicemail… just pure idiotic.

So, be warned. When applying for internships, jobs, campus rep positions… always remember to check your voicemails, look at missed calls, and check emails too (Editor’s Note: check spam folder!).

I know – I didn”t have my voicemail even set up for at least 6 months. What I didn”t realize is that people could still leave a voicemail, I just never knew about them! This was a great reminder that not everyone will text you!

I like the editor's note about checking your junk mail folder. I do this everyday! I received an email letting me know I was chosen to be interviewed for a sales job!! 🙂
