Tracey’s Angle: How your campus career center helps with internship and job searches

August 6, 2010

Hey all!

Just before every school year starts, thousands of college students are rushing to figure out whether they want an internship or not during the fall, and then, how they’re going to go about landing that internship.  One of the most common mistakes that I’ve noticed students make is not reaching out to their college career centers.  Don’t be too afraid to ask for help- career centers can not only guide you in finding the perfect internship, but they can also help you to prepare for submitting your application and going through the interview process.

Before I knew that the career center at my school existed, I scrambled around campus getting my friends and professors to proofread my resumes, and I practiced interviewing with an employer in front of the mirror.  After discovering the office and utilizing some of its services, I discovered that it was one of the most useful offices on campus!  My school’s career center helped me to strengthen my resume by…

  • Assisting me in articulating clear personal values and interests
  • Identifying my skills and abilities

The office prepped and guided my job/internship search by…

  • Helping me match my personality with a career field
  • Research various careers and jobs
  • Teaching me the value of a network of professional contacts
  • Helping me set career goals

I have always been a huge fan of my career center, and the people who help me out whenever I drop by. Upon graduation, the career center at my school will have helped me gain internship/work experience, explore and apply for graduate school programs and transition to the world of work and life after graduation.

Hope this inspires all the interns out there!
